Reclaiming traditional Indigenous names
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #17 asked all governments to allow residential school survivors and their families to reclaim their traditional names on their identification at no cost.
In response, the Ontario government made it possible for residential school survivors and their families to reclaim their traditional names at no cost.
The federal government has removed the fee for Indigenous Peoples to reclaim their traditional names on replacement passports, travel documents, citizenship certificates and permanent resident cards free of charge until May 30, 2026.
